Northgate Cuts Costs, Cuts Roof

Northgate Shopping Centre to Remove Roof, Rebrand as 'Northgrate'

Geraldton, WA — Shoppers at Northgate Shopping Centre are being urged to pack an umbrella after centre management proudly announced that the mall’s entire roof will be removed and replaced with a giant steel grate.

The bold $7,000 renovation plan comes after months of sky-high air-conditioning costs, which one insider claims had now surpassed the entire GDP of Northampton.

When asked if installing solar panels might have been a more sensible approach, or if rain would damage stock, centre management were unavailable for comment.

Security risks were raised at a recent council meeting, with critics warning the open-air design could make it easier for thieves to break in. However, council swiftly shut down concerns, noting that looking up and seeing bars was a good deterrent — and that if someone is willing to rappel eight metres to steal an Anko toaster, fair play to them.

Locals have already begun affectionately referring to the centre as "Northgrate," with early reviews describing the experience as "refreshingly carceral" and "not nearly as damp as you'd think, unless it rains."

Future plans for the centre include complimentary ponchos for shoppers spending over $30 and the installation of coin-operated umbrellas at key entrances. Management is also rumoured to be considering holding weekly "Grate Escapes," a promotional event where customers can win prizes for creatively escaping the centre during peak hour.

Although it is understood the centre’s resident pigeon population are thrilled with the announcement, leaseholders within the centre are not impressed with the news that the 'upgrade' will be funded by permanent shopfront rent increases.

More to come.
